ATL to NYC to Philly to D.C. to Brooklynati and back…

Before I even start this long ass post, that’s a picture of me with Kool Herc.  He was at the Brooklynati Release Party that me & DJ Brainchild rocked and I’m still buggin off of that.  If you don’t understand why, please click here for the story of how hip hop started.  And now to start this long ass (sorry), name dropping (sorry), long overdue (sorry) post, enjoy…

About two weeks ago I made a crazy trip from ATL to NYC to Philly to D.C. back to NYC then to Brooklynati and back home to Denver.  It all started with a trip to Atlanta for my grandfather’s 89th birthday (may we all be so lucky to be pushing 90 someday), then it was up to the northeast for all sorts of Tanya Morgan – Brooklynati release related events.  I touched down in NYC three hours late after a weather delay and it was off to link up with my boys Red, Ben, Che Grand & Von Pea for some pizza real quick before the Wale/Colin Munroe/Tanya Morgan show at Le Poisson Rouge.  When we got to the venue I found out Big Sean from G.O.O.D. Music and the highly underrated J. Cole (please stop sleeping on dude, Jigga caught on and just signed him to Roc Nation) were going on before us as an unexpected bonus.  Big Sean’s set was cool and J. Cole got the crowd’s attention quick by starting his set with a crazy acapella joint after announcing that “there’s probably only three people here that know who I am”.

After J. Cole wrapped up his set (check some clips from it here), I let him know that I’d been rocking his music for a while and I was “happy to be one of the three people that knew him”, then we stepped to the stage.  It’s always dope to rock with TM, they’re one of the most energetic hip hop groups I’ve ever seen onstage and it’s obvious that Donwill, Von Pea & Ilyas love performing.  The show went well, you could see fans with TM shirts, people in the crowd singing along and as far as NYC crowds go, the response was dope.  After the set we had to step outside for a minute, the venue was sold out and hot as fuck, plus there were interviews and drops to be recorded (check out the “I’m moving to Brooklynati” clip above, featuring me, my homie DJ Synapse from Frank151, Elliot Wilson, Joell Ortiz, Che, Fresh Daily, Double-O from Kidz in the Hall & a bunch of other cats explaining why we’re making the move).  I was running in and out of the venue the rest of the night and only caught pieces of both Colin Munroe & Wale’s sets (like an industry asshole…SMH).  What I did catch was really dope, everything from Joell Ortiz rockin “Piano Lessons” with Colin to Wale murdering “Good Girls” with UCB and breaking down into a Tribe medley halfway through.  I guess Cudi was in the building and rocked a few joints with Wale but I missed it.  Anyways, the show was packed and further proved that the time of the younger generation is at hand.

The next afternoon we hit up the XXL offices to kick it with the (now former) editor-in-chief Datwon Thomas (good dude, gotta love someone at the top rootin for the new kids) for a while before heading to Philly.  Philly was host to a listening party at a clothing store called Fresh Melt Water and we pretty much just hung out with some fans and randoms, drank free PBRs & listened to the album.  The homie super-producer Aeon was there, Philly hip hop aficionados Mikey McFly (check out the video below from his blog, featuring me, Aeon & Ilyas), C-Dot & Young H came out and after the listening party we ended up at a cool Paper Street party.  Afterwards we made it to Larry’s Cheesesteaks late night for some great drunk food.  I’d never been to Philly before and was geeked to get a real cheesesteak (pause?), anyone who knows me knows I love food, especially “local flava” in other cities (word to Low Key’s Local Flava in Brooklynati…two locations, what!).

After Philly it was off to D.C., where we had a release party with a performance at Liv.  First things first though, we hit up Yum’s for some chicken with mambo sauce (delicious local flava from D.C.).  Then it was off to college radio staple Funkadelic Freestyles where we met up with Oddisee, Kenn Starr, Gangsta Mittens and B.J., Amanda from HipHopDX.com and the FF crew, shouts to J Benok (check out the footage of the freestyle session w/TM, Oddisee & Kenn Starr here).  After that it was release party time.  I got to catch up with my homie Victor Nguyen-Long (dude is everywhere that dope events are going on, it’s always good to have him in the building), Mills, Simcity & DJ Harvey Dent at the venue before we performed.  The DJ setup was on the level above the performance stage looking down and that made for a weird, but solid, show for the D.C. crowd.

We left Liv and word was that there was a dope house party we needed to hit up.  I hadn’t been to a house party for years but the spot we ended up at was RIDICULOUS.  Turns out it was the homie K-Murdock (of Panacea/Subsoniq fame)’s birthday party and it was being held in some nice apartment complex’s party room, complete with catered food, dope music and a great vibe.  I ended up seeing my old RBMA buddie Marshall Law from Low Budget, the homie KB from Subsoniq and making some new friends at the party, good times.  Last but not least, how dope is K-Murdock’s Low End Theory pimp cup and Midnight Marauders tattoo?  Dude was also rocking custom ATCQ shoes too.  And you think you’re a Tribe fan…LOL.

After all that, it was back to NYC.  I linked up with some old friends and ended up at this dope taco truck where I got this AMAZING “grilled” corn.  It was cooked in a truck with a flame thrower and I’m not even sure what that is on the outside, but man, it was delicious.  The next day I got to hit up the Frank151 offices and see what goes on at the magazine that sponsors a lot of my events (their next issue, the De La one, is gonna be CRAZY).  Then me, Che Grand & my boy Red had the pleasure of checking out the homie Mikal Hameed aka M11X’s art studio, where he’s making some super dope pieces he calls sound sculptures.  Dude’s work is FANTASTIC, check out the pics below and over at his site.

Above: M11X x Stevie (and yes, the speakers really do work, it’s as easy as plugging in your ipod).  Below: M11X’s sound sculpture for the De La Soul 20th Anniversary Art Tour.

Coincidentally, Mikal’s studio is in the same building as Truth & Soul Records, home to one of my favorite bands out, El Michel’s Affair.  Mikal took us upstairs where we got to hear the new album they’re producing for Aloe Blacc (it was something special, think Aloe Blacc on some Bill Withers iddish).  Halfway into checking the album, El Michel’s Affair mastermind Leon Michels and the one-of-a-kind soul singer Lee Fields came by.  We were lucky enough to get to bullshit and listen to stories from Lee Fields for a while before it was off to the Fat Beats for the TM in-store and Brooklynati Release Party at Sutra.  If you don’t know why we were so lucky, check out the Lee Fields & the Expressions album, My World (one of my favorite albums of ’09 so far), and imagine hanging out with Lee, it’ll make perfect sense…LOL.

Next stop was a TM in-store at Fat Beats that went well (besides me not having access to Serato box and not being able to spin…sigh), check out some clips of it here.  After Fat Beats it was off to Sutra to get things going for the Brooklynati Release Party.  The party was super DOPE!!!  Me & Brainchild (of Gordon Gartrell Radio/Roots Jam Sessions fame) rocked a mix of random joints, TM songs & a few standards all night, the spot was packed, the crowd was open and the vibe was dope, not a whole lot more you can ask for.  Shouts to everyone who came out; the godfather of hip hop Kool Herc, the Daily Show’s Wyatt Cenac, the my boy Nai from StrictlyFitteds.com, Red, Spec Boogie, Elucid, Froactiv, DJ Synapse, Homeboy Sandman, Peter Hadar, the Audible Treats crew, all the girls in TM shirts who’s names I forgot (LOL…sorry), Joey the booking agent and last but not least, Dee Phunk from Rare Form, who setup the party and anyone else who I forgot.  And once again mad props to DJ Brainchild, there’s so few DJs who care to push the limits of what they can play and dude does that to the fullest, gotta love it.

Above: DJ Synapse, Spec Boogie, Joey & me at Sutra
Below: Me spinning in the cramped DJ booth, my right elbow is literally rubbing against the wall…LOL.

Anyways, after spinning at Sutra, we grabbed some pizza and called it a night.  The next day I flew home to good ol’ Denver (I LOVE my city) and started grinding hard to get things going for my new weekly parties, So Damn Down on Saturdays and Hapa Life Sundays (plus of course, the award winning Solution on Fridays).  Now here I am, two weeks later, finally posting about my trip and damn, that was a long post, thanks for reading it all.

DJ Low Key on KTCL’s Mixtape Thursdays…Shouts to Ralphie & Judge for bringing more dope hip hop to commercial radio in Denver…

A few weeks back I recorded this short mix that aired on Judgemental (of Basementalism fame) and Ralphie’s new Mixtape Thursdays show on KTCL 93.3 FM.  The show airs every Thursday night from 11 PM to 1 AM and features all sorts of dope hip hop, including mixes from great national and local DJs including Z-Trip, Vajra, Lazy Eyez, B-Money and more.  It’s been a hit so far (check some of the press here) and for those of y’all that don’t know, KTCL is the same Denver-based, primarily rock station that helped launch Flobots and 3OH!3 during their recent rise to fame and has more recently been opening up the airwaves to more & more hip hop lately.  Good things Denver, good things, thanks Ralphie & Judge.  Anyways, check out the unedited and clean versions of my set below and stay tuned for more DJ Low Key guest spots on KTCL’s Mixtape Thursdays real soon.

.:Tanya Morgan w/DJ Low Key, Blu & Peter Hadar – Live at SXSW 2009:.

Like most of my flights out of town, my trip to Austin started with next to no sleep and a mad dash to wrap up loose ends for the time I’m gone, prepare for whatever random DJ iddish I’m spinning & all the normal travel stuff.  I rushed to the airport after sleeping an hour and missed my flight’s check-in by literally couple of minutes, thanks to some confusion on the part of Frontier Airlines’ employees (WTF…come on y’all).  Anyways, after 4 1/2 stressed, frustrated & tired hours of explaining the situation and talking/yelling/bargaining/etc with a variety of Frontier employees & managers during the busiest flying week short of Christmas I ended up barely making it on a flight to Austin.

A couple of short hours and half a nap later I touched down in Austin, where I was picked up by Tanya Morgan and the homie Dom from IM Culture and after catching up for a minute, it was time to figure out some last minute details for the set and get me SXSW credentials (word to DJing for rap groups & the parties it can get you into…LOL).  Once  I had my artist bracelet it was off to the infamous Red Bull Moon Tower to spin a few sets before the 1am Tanya Morgan show I’d be DJing at later.

It’s a well known fact that Red Bull is known for throwing exceptional parties and the Moon Tower was another one for the ages.  People were lined up super early and there was an excitement (or maybe just an impressive energetic drunkness) for the exclusive, invite-only event that the Denver Post called the #1 SXSW party (although technically it’s not even a SXSW party).  I played a bunch of new music from Che Grand, Daniel Merriweather, TiRon, Colin Munroe with some older classics and sleepers, plus some exclusive TM and U-N-I/Ro Blvd songs that the crowd was into.  I wish I had those sets to post along with the TM stuff, sorry y’all.  Around 12:30, I rushed off stage at the Moon Tower as the homie (and fellow Red Bull Music Academy Mr. X) DJ Scuba Gooding showed up to take over the turntables and it was off to DJ for Tanya Morgan at Back Alley Social.

This being my first SXSW trip I wasn’t quite ready for the rushed conditions and mess of equipment that goes along with having so many acts playing marathon style (no soundcheck, horrible sound in the club, switching out mixers between acts without checking any levels, one turntable that was broken and completely useless, no vocals in the monitors, etc).  With that said, it wasn’t my best show with TM, but I think we pulled things off pretty well all things considered.  Mad energy, a set featuring all new songs from the upcoming TM album Brooklynati (it drops on 5/12, preorders are available now), a special appearance from Kay (of the Foundation and Time:Line w/Nicolay fame, who I didn’t recognize because he wasn’t wearing his trademark glasses, even though we’ve kicked it in Denver…LOL) & super-producer Aeon rockin out on the edge of the stage when we played “She’s Gone” (the song he produced from the new album).  After the showcase it was back to the packed Red Bull Moon Tower for a relatively uneventful wrap up to the night (only uneventful because it I was exhausted, the party went on strong til 5am).

Above: This pic corresponds to the beginning of the “All Eye Need” snippet from the SXSW live EP if you’re keeping score at home.

Above: Donwill & Ilyas of Tanya Morgan/Ilwil with me on the turntables. Below: Me & Von Pea use teamwork to show the crowd how to count to ten.

The next day started in the early afternoon with me rushing over to the Nahright/Smoking Section/Ruby Hornet showcase for a sound check that never ended up happening (the venues seemed overwhelmed with all the acts performing everywhere we went).  Once I was at the spot I managed to see my friends from the Hiero tour, the Blue Scholars, crush it as usual for a packed house before getting caught up with the homies Blu, Exile & J Kim, who I hadn’t seen since the “Blu Collar Worker” video shoot in LA (I was heavily/randomly involved in making the video from the classic album Below The Heavens happen).

The place was full when me & Tanya Morgan got on stage to rock a completely different set than the night before. This time the venue was way more on top of things than the spot from the night before (two working turntables even…LOL) and the show went off a lot smoother.  Both Peter Hadar & Blu made a special appearances to rock their features from Brooklynati (once again, it drops May 12th), check out the video below of “Morgan Blu” (featuring guess who). After our set we stayed and watched Blu & Exile rock (Blu spitting over Ex playing live on the MPC is awesome). Then, as Blu & Exile were midway through their last song, Charles Hamilton managed to play himself by starting his set before Blu & Ex had even finished performing (and after that same set he played himself again by claiming he produced a song he performed that was actually produced by Black Spade, another performer in the same showcase, SMH, check the whole story at freshselects.net if you haven’t already). Anyways, check out more coverage of the Nahright/Smoking Section/Knuckle Rumbler party over here, here & here.

After the show I was supposed to join Tanya Morgan for an interview out in front of the venue but instead got caught up talking to Exile inside.  I ran outside looking for the group and saw their frequent collaborator, producer 88 Keys, so I asked if he’d seen them.  He hadn’t but I turned the corner to find TM, tell them 88 was around the corner and see Donwill chase him down to say what up and have him join us for the interview.  About five minutes into the interview, Homeboy Sandman walks by, TM flags him down and a crazy cipher that eventually came to feature all of Tanya Morgan, 88 Keys, Truth Live, Fresh Daily, Homeboy Sandman & P. Casso broke out. You can find the four parts over at 2Dopeboyz, but make sure you check part three where Von Pea spit the instantly classic (ahahaha) lines “Now it seems we in a house of dreams/trying to keep it low key & still sound supreme” (word to the Solution).  There were all sorts of dope MCs rapping with me in the background, check out the clips, ahahahaha.

That pretty much finished the “work” (I LOVE my job) part of my trip to Austin.  I definitely gotta mention that the pics with the fancy logos were taken by Seher Sikandar from RehesCreative.com, make sure you check her work out, she’s great (and nice and hopefully not mad I’m posting her pics).  Also, make sure you download the live EP below if you haven’t already and check out the pics & stories from the rest of my trip after the jump:

Oh shit…The Hardcore Gentlemen added me on myspace…RUGGED & SMOOTH!!!

I LOVED these guys’ song “Hardcore Gentlemen (Rugged & Smooth)” back in the mid-90s (I remember it was right between Il Al Skratch “I’ll Take Her” & some Heather B remix on an old S&S dub that I rocked to death…RIP tapes).  It was definitely one of those super east coast, Timbos & North Face jacket, tri-state classic kinda joints on every mixtape that fall.  Anyways, I think M.O.P. pretty much deaded the Gentlemen’s career when they unnecessarily dissed them on the “Rugged Neva Smooth” remix.  I hadn’t seen them mentioned for years until they added me on myspace the other day (turns out myspace is only almost completely useless in ’09…LOL), so I figured why not put y’all younger cats up on a some 90s mixtape legends.  Looks like they’re back doing shows even, what a world.

.:The Hardcore Gentlemen on Myspace:.

I’m sorry…I really should talk about Kid Hum – Fossil Fuel more than I do…

I mean, its not like I haven’t featured his projects over the last couple of years, but man, his last joint, Fossil Fuel, was an AMAZING album and charting it #1 (for whatever that’s worth) on my weekly charts when it dropped wasn’t enough, I wanna talk about it some more.  First off, let me give a disclaimer: I’ve known Kid Hum aka DJ Dylon for, I dunno, maybe six years.  I remember when he first linked up with Basementalism Radio Show and would come in on some intern shit, write down the playlists of all the songs me & the other DJs played and take the playlist from the DJ studio to the room the hosts recorded in.  Basementalism had a bunch of different kids (yeah, dude was a definitely a kid when I first met him…LOL) who did this over the years but Kid Hum seemed far more into the records than pretty much any other young cat coming into the station.  With that said, over the last few years I’ve watched dude become a consummate digger and connoisseur of all sorts of random hip hop, breaks & records in general.

I found out Hum was making beats a few years back, I liked his Songster remix iddish and like most of Denver (and the CMJ charts), I thought his 7-song Suicide Watch EP with Whygee, Sunken State & DJ B-Money was one of the best projects to drop in CO in years.  The EP & collection of remixes were a great introduction to Hum’s beats but listening to Fossil Fuel really showed me that he wasn’t just dropping a few good beats here & there, but dude was really crushing it.  For 18 tracks on Fossil Fuel, Dylon/Hum holds my attention better than 99% of instrumental projects using a mix of super dope beats, quirky samples from weird records, drops he collected at Basementalism and maybe a few more robo-drops than necessary (my only “complaint” about the record and a small one at that).  And last but not least, gotta thank Hum for the shout on “Rain”, I must be doing something right…LOL.  Anyways, download Fossil Fuel below, check out the Suicide Watch EP & stay tuned for Offshore Drilling, an upcoming collab between Kid Hum & Rock The Dub featuring a variety of MCs rockin over songs from Fossil Fuel, coming soon.  And oh yeah, buy some Kid Hum beats.

Catch me in A Love Supreme Sessions #8, then download U-N-I & Ro Blvd’s BRILLIANT album, A Love Supreme, for free…

My old friend Ro Blvd and the homies Y-O & Thurzday (aka U-N-I) have been working overtime for a loooooooong time on their brilliant new album, A Love Supreme, and it finally dropped at 12:01am this morning on some midnight sale iddish.  I’ve been raving about it since Ro sent me the snippet tape last year and trust me, the finished album is even better, easily one of the best albums I’ve heard in years.  It got an XL (aka 4/5) in the new XXL and truth be told, I’d probably have rated it higher if I reviewed it.  Anyways, check out the clip below from DRG Films’ great A Love Supreme Sessions behind the scenes series (#8 – The Release) featuring thoughts on the record from me, Tanya Morgan, El Prez, Cook Classics, Devi Dev, Bad Lucc, Faahz & more while you download the album for free (yeah…U-N-I & Ro are giving away one of the best records of 2009 for free, hit them on myspace/twitter/facebook/etc & tell ’em thanks).

Before I head to Austin I gotta make a quick stop in Brooklynati…

The other day I got this postcard from my homie Dominic talkin about how he was visiting Brooklynati and they have a restaurant called “Low Key’s Local Flava”.  It wouldn’t really be a big deal except for the fact that throughout the whole Hiero tour last summer I forced to Donwill & Von Pea from Tanya Morgan to start eating “local flava” in each city (aka whatever food the city’s known for) rather than their former tour diet of Subway.  By the end of the tour I remember them talkin about how they couldn’t go back to eat at Subway again, LOL.  Anyways, I looked into Low Key’s Local Flava on the Brooklynati Chamber of Commerce web site & it seems like my kinda spot. Brooklynati is always dope this time of year so I figured why not check it out on my way to Austin.  I’ll let y’all know how it goes.

And whatever you do, don’t. hate. my. crew. cuz. we. get. so. damn. down.

yes. so. damn. down.

* P.S. Catch me spinning sets at the Red Bull Moon Tower before & after the Tanya Morgan show on Thursday night/Early Friday morning. And definitely make sure you catch me DJing again at the second TM show on Friday afternoon in Nahright/TSS showcase, the lineup is crazy dope.  Damn, this week is about to get INSANE, see y’all down there.
